It is unfortunate that whomever saw the original photo and recirculated it on Facebook has caused some issues.
In which case I apologize, unequivocally so, for casting a 'slur'.
I have memories of the SCMP (HK'ers may disagree) being a 'higher' news organization than most regional peers ..compared to what I'd seen till moving to HKG years' back, but can vouch for the standards- both on reporting and the language- slipping sharply in the past few. That dismay came out wrongly in this case, for which I apologise.
