My example usually is coming in internationally into IAD, EWR or SFO with a connection to DEN. If UA messes things up, I get bumped. They have in the past told me that I've gone from domestic first to economy E- middle seat. Haha.
In those cases I've said I'm willing to wait for later flights since most of the time hub to hub flights will have a connection that is only slightly later.
So who makes those decisions? As I'm generally flexible its never come to a head, but this process bugs me. Especially if UA owns the original cause for the delay.
If there is available space, as a displaced passenger, you should get the space (ahead of waitlisted upgraders or voluntary standby). However, if no space, that's when you get economy. If flexible, the first flight with space should be available. But UA generally will not downgrade someone to make space.
So have you have been put into economy when there was open space in your purchased cabin?
