Yes, but once before SDC days I was able to get an airport (counter) agent to confirm me before the upgraders. Made a point of telling she was doing me a favor.

But with SDC if the fare class opens you should be able to confirm immediate even before getting to the airport. At 2-3 hours out and maybe earlier, if space is available, the fare class should open up.
