This is good advice. It allows you to focus on the destinations and their charms instead of trying to maintain a hectic air schedule. It also makes reward and other travel planning a lot easier! You could go crazy trying to work thru all the combinations.
In terms of doing your homework, I would simply encourage you to be aware of pricing when traveling between continents. USA-Asia can't transit a 3rd region w/o pricing becoming additive, for example, but USA-Europe-Africa can price as USA-Africa. Don't forget the partner carriers that can't be booked online. As as example, if you want to do a safari look into flying into Kilimanjaro, Tanzania - JRO is the airport code - served by Kenya Airways
(awards not on delta.com) as well as KLM.
