Aman took us to Amangalla, which is an easy 2 hour drive, for our final night. We were welcomed by the lovely Sean F and he and our butler arranged the plans for our stay without any fuss and showing much flexibility. We loved our cool and very large suite on the top floor, which was in immaculate condition. Even though the ground floor of the hotel is busy with other tourists, they somehow managed to ensure that hotel guests are looked after immediately and always get the best tables on the terrace. We enjoyed afternoon tea and then a fabulous dinner in the evening. Breakfast by the lovely pool the next morning was also good. Our butler was constantly checking in with us and helped us with all our onward travel admin. The building itself is iconic and has been restored in a very sympathetic way. Galle is a very interesting place with lots to see and is currently experiencing much gentrification and foreign investment. As Pausanias correctly stated it is most appealing early in the morning and again in the evening. I would note that we found the weather in Galle to be unbelievably hot most of the time with hardly any breeze. As much as I loved Amangalla I think two nights there would be the most I could spend as I prefer to be at the beach or in the countryside.
Amangalla feels like Aman as we know it with excellent service and I would certainly return.
It's an easy 2 hour journey on the highway from Galle back to the airport. We were told to get to the airport 5 hours prior to departure due to the airport resurfacing - there were notes in all rooms from the airport authority saying this. We refused, which I think made our butler slightly nervous and arrived 3 hours before take off, which was absolutely fine. Sri Lankan has a separate business class fast track terminal which may have saved us some time, but we still had hours to spare. We flew business on Sri Lankan to Dubai. Flat bed and OK food. Then BA F to London which was as underwhelming as the outbound trip.
