The renewal is essentially updating the information they have--what countries you've visited, address and employment changes etc. They send the new card via mail, which is how I got my original card. I'm assuming the photo is the same.
I believe if the card expires, they make you do a new application. At least that happened to my coworker. He also learned the card still works after it expires!
So it sounds like I'm going to have to go through the whole process again.
I renewed my Global Entry application, and apparently it is a known bug or "feature" that if you do that, then you cannot renew NEXUS until it expires.
It's completely stupid.
I wish I had known that about the card still being useful. Of course it doesn't matter now, because AirFrance has lost my NEXUS card along with everything else.
