This is was a fantastic use of Amex MR points. This is why I spend so much time churning credit cards.
If your final destination was CDG (without any layover in AUH) then I think you would have got SFO-IST-CDG (On Turkish) using Aeroplan miles in J for 55K miles one way. Also, the fuel surcharges are minimal compared to what you would have paid for EY J ticket using Etihad miles.
