Yup - there's the issue. Only time I get asked for my card is when I have booked close to departure.
If you're using a stolen card, you wouldn't book a long time ahead!
About 75-80% of my trips are booked only a couple of days out, so this doesn't add up by itself. What might add to the mix is that it's through BA Holidays rather than through a normal TA or the website. It's also the only time I can remember using two payment methods for one itinerary.
