Over the oceans I usually don't mind lowering the shades -- but sometimes....
Flying on Xmas day 2014 SGN-CDG is a daytime flight. I had a window seat in business class which was empty -- only 3 people sitting in the second cabin on the 77.
The sky was clear almost the whole trip over Asia. This was just a few months after MH 17 so I was a bit concerned, but the view was amazing.
Have also seen the aurora borealis sitting on the right side from DTW-NRT a few times.
