This probably sounds like quibbling, and it's most likely because I was unclear, but I wouldn't say it's overall too pricey but too pricey for what you get. If it was world class than worth it but the place just felt a bit soulless to me. In many cases we got a"good deal" since the child surcharge was waived, we got free (and more importantly hassle-free and good) baby sitting.
For me the room just didn't do it. It kinda felt like I was just in a bedroom smaller than the one at my home. The grounds, historically interesting, weren't great for exploring. The pool wasn't my design taste either.
Ina place like Siem reap I just do t see the allure. I think to develop a value proposition, we should figure out the cost of a good tour guide, which seems to be about $100 pp per day. Food (and massages) in town are remarkably cheap, so the price differential may be $1000 per night for (imo) questionably better accommodations. And I would have liked to have wandered on our own, sometimes, too
My pockets aren't as stuffed as yours!
I can't edit this this because I'm writing on my phone. Sry
