Another scenario - if for some reason the checked luggage hasnt arrived via Ethiopian at DXB then I am truly in a fix, for Marhaba cant do anything about it as theres nothing they can do if the bags are not on the carousel, and I would have to chase Ethiopian after reaching my final destination in India.

All in all just hand luggage option seems to look better with no worries at all. Must watch those videos where people pack in an incredible amount of shirts and trousers and even shoes in a carry on!!
If your bags don't make it to the carousel in DXB you'd need file a PIR (Property Irregulary Report?) with Ethiopian who would then need to deliver it to you at your current location, even if this is in India. Your main issue here will be finding a baggage agent to file the report with, though Marhaba may be able to assist here. Not sure if the Menzies (or is it dnata?) transit desk in Conc D would do it, also not a convenient place to hang around with an onward with EK, so yes, HBO is the way to go. I always travel with hand baggage only on EK and don't generally run into issues with my rollaboard + laptop bag with total weight typically around 12kg. The trick is to make it look light and run away if they ask questions (literally had to do this at a zoo of a gate in DXB for an India-bound flight last month)
