BA obviously believes to be more clever than the EU (which is not a surprise) but even more clever than the UK government. In their regulations they hold that that the baby seat must
face the same direction as the passenger seat on which it is positioned
For this bit, are BA being more clever or more restrictive - i.e. safer? While the EU/UK CAA may permit rear facing, BA do not, and so car seats installed on BA seats have to comply with BA's tighter rules. This would have been tested/decided by BA Engineering, etc.

Had you known in advance you wouldn't have brought the usual seat and might have taken other precautions.

It deems your seat not as safe as it would like, and either wants a seat compliant with BA policy or for you to hold your little 'un.
