He'll need to replace the non-status FF number with the one providing benefits. If he prefers to accrue on BA he can ask the gate agent to change it shortly before boarding.
It is a pet hate of mine that AB members get full OW benefits on BA and other airlines whilst AB do not recipricate. Advanced seat assignments on AB are only for their own elites unless you pay.
