Keep in mind that how much a Starpoint is worth today may be very different than what it may be worth in 2018 and beyond.
Starwood and Marriott are merging, but neither how the combined program will work nor when exactly it will go into effect has been announced, but it very well could be sometime in 2018.
And for a standpoint of earning enough point to use, that could be pretty soon, no?
So IMHO if you've not been collecting SPG points much up to now, I don't know if it makes that much sense to start at this late point in Starwood's limited remaining life.
