Question about peanut allergies

My stepson, age 16, has a peanut allergy. He's never flown before, so our upcoming July trip to Italy will be his first time. We are flying Cincinnati to Paris on Delta, connecting to Alitalia from Paris to Rome.

I called Delta and they said they will ask the people immediately surrounding him to not eat peanut products. I'm not aware of how Alitalia, our connection from Paris to Rome, will handle it.

I've been on planes recently where they ask us to forgo all peanut products, even those we brought with us. So I'm getting mixed information and I'm not sure what's correct. We will bring two epi-pens with us, and he should be okay as long as the people immediately around him are not eating peanuts. But he's so allergic that if he even smells the scent of peanuts, it makes him nauseous and he has a mild reaction. Of course, he's 16, so he doesn't want anyone to notice him or make a fuss. I know he's not going to take it seriously enough to alert the flight attendant. I'll need to handle it. Or his dad. I'm just not sure what to say. I don't want to be difficult but I don't want him to have a terrible reaction over the Atlantic, hours from landing.

How are peanut allergies handled on planes these days? I'd especially like to hear from people with allergies, or parents of kids with allergies.
