AC wasn't in dire times when they divested AP. It was a legitimate monetization strategy of the holding company, ACE Aviation Ltd., to give their shareholders a bunch of money.
It could have easily been kept and remained as a part of AC. But the owners thought they could do better separating it into its own separate entity.
