Likely (a) was ahead of everyone and they checked in when they arrived at the airport between T-60 and T-30 (minutes). Also don't forget any of those pax could have been 1Ks on M fares, or other 1Ks with instruments ahead of you in addition to GS.
How were you determining there was only 1 seat left? If seatmap, could have been unblocked seats. If from inventory, then could have been a cancel or misconnect.
Well, If this flyer in option a) was 1k on M, they should be upgraded on booking and during booking there were no seats available( I have been applying my RPUs to all my flights regardless of seat availability) so that kind of makes me suspicious of the circumstances- Only thing I can imagine is all 3 of them were GS, (a) on a paid fare in a higher booking class like Y/B/M and then they got upgraded, followed by the 2 GS on paid fare (lower fare class)/ award.
