Don't forget to check the insurance value of a car, if you use your credit card for protection: those policies exclude the cars with MSRP over $50K (and $75K-100K for premium protection plans). In the European countries with insanely high anti-car taxes you can pass that limit with something as simple as a Mercedes E-class.

Also, pay attention to driving restrictions - the high-end models aren't allowed to be driven across the border - any insurance will be void if you do.
I'm not sure that's necessarily accurate. The Alfa 4C (which I finally got confirmed) is OK to drive in most Western European countries, at least per Sixt's policy.
