I tend to attempt to guest someone in when they have a long layover or who look like they could use a nice gesture. Some have been very appreciative. I've been turned down twice by people I suspect thought I was inviting to a bar or to pick up as a date (Admirals Club).
Recently I was in the Alaska Lounge at PDX before an early morning flight. I overheard two ladies trying to access the lounge but only one of them had a membership and the membership didn't permit guests. I spoke up and said to the attendant "surely she can be my guest" and he promptly let her in due to my Admirals Club membership allowing guests.
Another time at the same lounge I did the same thing to which the attendant allowed the person in but said they had to leave when I left, which they did.
