I managed to solve this by starting on flights.google.co.uk selecting the flight I wanted, and then clicking on the link to book through Malaysian Airline website. This took me to a different looking airline website where I was able to complete the purchase.

Previously I had started with www.malaysianairline.com where when I clicked on link to book a flight took me to a webpage with 'beta' on it.
