The Tourist Information Center for the Kyoto (and Kansai) region is an excellent source of information and advice. It is located on the 9th floor of the huge JR Kyoto Station building. The modernistic station itself is worth some time exploring. The TIC always has English speaking attendants.

There is also a small TIC just outside the JR Nara Station in Nara, right near the main bus stop for the station. Turn left as you exit the main station entrance.
