Having just gone through something similar, some advice for anyone who might see this thread in the future. Reach out to the club directly and explain your situation.

I had planned a trip to Blackburn for Blackburn-Preston on March 18th (2017 for anyone reading this thread way in the future). About a week before we left I found out that due to it being a local derby they may choose to limit ticket sales to only people in their database. I dashed off a quick email to the club explaining my situation and they got me setup in their system so that when tickets went on sale I had no problem buying one.

Talking to other friends who have made trips from the States for big matches they had found other clubs also very willing to help out Americans. They realize you're coming a long way and don't really have another chance to go to a game so they seem to be willing to work with you. One friend, a die-hard Newcastle fan, had the club get him a ticket to a "sold out" match against rival Sunderland at the last minute.
