For sure, if the judgement is upheld it will set a precedent. However, the calculation of damages in the case of loss of life is a complicated actuarial analysis, so whats probably the most important thing here is the judgement in favor of the plaintiffs, not really the amount that was awarded, IMO.
So, now that a layman has gotten on the soapbox, can we hear from an ambulance chaser.....?
