Auto parts as baggage

I'm planning a trip to the UK to buy some car parts and wanted to get an anti roll bar. It looks like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Jaguar-XJS...-/321973365905

It's a steel rod, 9/16" diameter and about 44" long. The bent ends are about 10" long.

Should I try and box it up, knowing that the box is likely to get crushed and the ends will stick out, or should I clean it up and have them wrap a baggage tag around it and check it "bare" so to speak?

Is there a chance I could carry it on and have the cabin crew put it in the closet? ( I suspect not, but had to ask)

I'll likely be travelling WTP on the 788 on a direct flight.
