For airline purposes, you don't need to put a date of birth on tickets.
But the governments of Canada and China do require airlines to collect information from passengers, which is submitted to the government. This information includes your date of birth.
You didn't need to enter this information yourself as the airline will collect it regardless. Many people do enter it themselves as occasionally this will allow you to skip physical check-in at the airport, if you are only taking hand baggage.
When your present your passport at the airline check-in counter, any information from your passport that you had previously entered wrongly will be replaced with the correct information from your passport.
