On second thought I must agree with you , about not using the RER train at that time of the day. And its not luggage friendly.
But if you take the Air France bus, donīt get off at Lyon, go to Montparnasse station instead. From there its about 1 km to the hotel - St Placide metro station is one stop from Montparnasse.
Last Line4 AF bus seems to leave the airport at 21.30 (9.30PM)
