Late May/early June is the best time to visit the outback/red centre & the top end(NT)
Cold is relative. Up there they consider day temperatures of 18°C/64°F cold and 40°C/104°F getting hot. Nights can get a lot colder, below freezing at times.

Jan-Feb is hot and uncomfortable.

As well as the rock there is the Olgas & Kings Canyon. These are some distance part.
In the NT 200km/150miles is considered close
