Will be travelling in late Sept and returning in early Oct. in case the dates of the flight make any difference to the routing. Seating is still wide open so I want to try to get the correct side now if I can.
Side question: if you have great seat(s) in coach for a a view of the mountains - or in fact a great view on any domestic route or route under (fill in the blank) hours and you can get a free upgrade to business/first but with NO view would you take the upgrade?

I'm an aisle seat fanatic and rarely gaze out the window anymore but know that many people do enjoy the views out West. I'd suggest the ABC side on the Eastbound PHX/ATL flight and the DEF side on the Westbound ATL/PHX flight. That way you'll be on the North side of the plane both ways and there will be much less glare out your window.
And on your coach with a view or FC without a view question, I agree with dspringer28. Go for the upgrade. On these longer flights movies are usually shown and most people drop the windowshades somewhat. So that's going to cut into the view a little bit anyway. Plus you could have cloud cover for 2/3's or more of your flight so better to go for the sure thing.
