What you mean by appearance, age, frequency of travel (is your passport worn and full of stamps). Should I be dressed up and look like I have money or a backpacker look to influence that? My passport has few stamps not many at all.
I don't think you need to be dressed up but I think being neatly dressed, coiffed and shaved help.

I have miles in several airline programs so if I need to show a return ticket in a hurry, I can just book an award ticket on the airline iPhone app. I've never needed to do so, but if it ever happened it would only take about 30 seconds.
