As the booking was made with a travel agent they "own" the reservation until you make the first flight.
Do not use the word "change" when talking to them.
I think I will call Alitalia again just to try and get it fixed before turning up at the airport as I think buying new tickets is just absurd. If that doesn't work, I will rely on:

There is no big deal here. This sort of stuff happens all the time. If you want to feel safe, show up at LHR 10 minutes earlier and have it fixed, otherwise don't bother. You will have no problems checking in.
