Yes, but..

You cannot route LAX-MEL-SYD on an LAX-SYD fare component. It may require a bit of legwork to change to an LAX-MEL-SYD itinerary, with the most brute-force solution being change the ticket to LAX-MEL and book a separate ticket from MEL to SYD.
