I'll add a vote for Krakow which is one of my favourite small cities in Europe. Warsaw is OK but it feels like you could be anywhere.

I'm just back from an fun weekend in Budapest. Lots to see and do and the hotels, food and drink are excellent value.

I also like Lisbon which is a kind of mini-Barcelona but cheaper and with fewer pickpockets and prostitutes on the streets.
