If it holds true for the US, then even small external drives like mine don't help you securing your data. (I have the Seagate 114.5 x 76 x 20.35mm drive.)
Seems like it would get down to cloud backup or pack it and hope for the best.
If we have to check from point of departure, and considering we have a 9-hour layover in DOH before heading to the US, odds our electronics will be there in LAX? Slim to none. (Would also greatly enhance someone putting something in the bags. Dumb. Dumb. Dumb.
