I was given my KTN by my interviewing agent right after he took my fingerprints. You'll have to wait for the GE ID card to be mailed to you, but you don't need that to use the kiosks.
To be clear, you don't need the KTN to use the GE kiosks either; all you need is the passport. The only thing you need the KTN for is to add it to your reservation to get a very high probability of Pre Check.
