Myself (gold) and a member of my family (silver) flew a CE sector recently, something that had been booked many months ago. We had 1A/C selected, right up until online checkin at which point we found ourselves inexplicably moved to row 4.
Same thing happened to Mrs CC and Mstr CC a couple of weeks back. Right up to and including picking their boarding cards at the airport both were 1A/1C. Check-in Staff then issues 2D and 4F and as I had already said to Mrs CC I had secured the front row she didn't spot the issue until the last minute. Gate staff wouldn't change anything.
Mstr CC is 6yrs, so to split him from his mum was not on and he was upset to be sitting next to a man he didn't know. Thankfully the crew asked a few people to move around and finally both could sit together. As with your encounter 1A/C seemed to be chatting to the gate staff happily before departure
