I haven't booked a non-refundable rate at Marriott yet but did book a lot of non-refundable rates at Hilton in last few years and I don't think my card was ever charged before check-in.
I currently have large ($800-$1000) deposit charges against my card for two separate upcoming bookings (one in April, one in June). Like the one discussed here, neither is nonrefundable, but both have 21 day cancel windows. If I were to cancel prior to 21 days out, the charge would be refunded. If I were to cancel within 21 days, they would keep the deposit.
This is an increasing industry trend.
