The AS website does not offer the shorter connection as an option but before I call and ask....I assume that there is a reason why. I don't know the logistics of AS flights in LAX so perhaps such a connection is impossible or too risky.

Minimum connect time (MCT) at LAX for international to domestic is 2.0 hours. Sometimes, you need every bit of it. GE will certainly get you through faster, but no way will AS ticket < 2.0 hours.
