In your case MAD/CPH are now the open jaw/destination, adding MLA as a stopover puts it over MPM, it really is that simple.
Great discussion, but....... Isn't SYD the furthest point from YYZ? Shouldn't SYD be the "destination", while WLG/AKL should be treated as "open jaw outside of destination"?

Assume each direction is within MPM, does the following route work?

YYZ-DPS-(Destination)-NRT/KIX(Open jaw)-PVG(Stopover)-YYZ
