The two operate a very tightly coordinated JV. THey don't compete nearly as much as you're implying.
The UA flights are earlier in both directions, providing access to different connection banks than what LH offers access to. Also, the UA route SFO-MUC is seasonal in the high season.

There is cooperation there between LH & UA much more than it is competition. They coordinate fares and markets served.
