All the airlines block seats for elites, but I think AA is the worst offender of the domestics.

On an award ticket Gold can get to select the MCE after T-24 if there is still any available. Else there is NOTHING Gold could do about it even MCE is available for sale on a pay ticket.
It is Award Ticket we are talking about here so your comment is not even relevant, and frankly, misleading.
