The Club Europe set-up is pretty much the norm within European airlines these days, only TK has a full 2 plus 2 seating, and some of their aircraft also have the same layout as BA. For the lounge access, I have to say I agree with BA's stance here, particularly at school holidays the lounges would be severely over-run if parents travelling Club could bring in children travelling economy. Where I agree is that there should have been at least 2 meal choices from Malta for all passengers. The problem that sometimes arises is if all the front row passengers go for one option, which is unusual but can certainly happen. That means there will be no choice at the back. Very occasionally there can be 3 meal options if there was a meal untaken on the outbound and the flight timings permit it.
