Hey, I took that flight! (Monday SFO-ORD on the high-density 777.) Or to be precise I boarded that flight, then got off when they re-opened the door.
There actually was a mx problem -- a mechanic spent a fair amount of time trying to fix a seat in the J cabin and indeed they boarded only the Y cabin while leaving J at the gate for a while. Boarding was also delayed due to significant confusion over the last-minute delay. It looked like they had only reassigned seats to pax whose seats had vanished; my seat in the "C" section did not change with the last-minute swap.
After they resolved the mx problem, they had missed their takeoff slot and posted an ATC delay. At this point I just left, one of the few times I have walked off a plane. Worked out great, much better to be stranded in SFO than ORD.
