Just this morning I arrived in FRA from the US (on LH), connecting to Prague (also LH). To get to the B gates from Z I had to go through passport control, customs (which really is just walking through the green "nothing to declare" gate) and then security.
My flight is departing from the B gates, but they are connected to A behind security (i am in an A lounge right now).
I have to say, FRA is becoming an even greater maze than it always has been.
The trick with Z to B connections is understanding that if you go to A first, you only have to go through immigration and then can use the tunnel between A and B without having to go through security again.
Depending on when you start looking for signs you could easily miss this and end up outside security. There is also the more complicated matter of which B gate you were at.
