It seems we picked up some time while we were asleep, and the aircraft from FRA-VCE picked up a short delay. Despite parking at a remote (V gate, having to wait for a bus and then proceed to the terminal at a geriatric pace we made it to the gate just as boarding (the busses) was beginning.

In the event of a misconnect due to a delay, it is the responsibility of the late-delivering carrier to handle the rebooking. That would be UA. Not LH. UA may well have LH handle the ticket reissue, but it is nonetheless UA's responsibility.
This is certainly true, but at certain hubs, with lots of frequencies to your final destination, it may be easier just to deal with the onward carrier for rebooking. So at FRA or MUC, I wouldn't hesitate to ask an LH agent to rebook me to VCE, just as I've had CX do the rebooking HKG-BKK when UA delivered me late.
