I don't think that the LH systems proactively rebook, but act like the description up-thread where the original flight agent triggers that you missed the flight and then it rolls to the next flight.
I have misconnected several times in FRA on UA-LH itins and every time LH automatically rebooked me on the next available flight (earlier flight already gone).
