We've been twice and upgraded to RBC both times with points (1500/night + fifth night free by calling SPG directly to book). Got upgraded to ocean view as Gold on our second night. In my opinion RBC is totally worth it. Breakfast & Happy Hour are included and you can make a delicious panini at breakfast to enjoy on the beach for lunch! It's practically all-inclusive. Plus it feels more exclusive than the main hotel and all rooms have private terraces. Even if you don't get the ocean upgrade you will have a private terrace overlooking the lagoon with beautiful sunsets.
PLUS we were offered 10k SPG points for taking a 90 minute timeshare tour of the Lagunamar which was like getting a 30% rebate in points. WARNING: Don't get suckered in. If you love the place and want to buy a timeshare, you can buy a resale for next to nothing.

I am aware of the construction that's going to be going on, but it's quite cheap in points compared to anything else in SPG, Marriott, or Hilton on my dates.
