This. A thousand times over. And do consider getting lawyered up. If the story given to you is true, you were the victim of a room invasion and theft by a Marriott employee or contractor. And you still haven't been reimbursed for what is missing.
Your response may determine just how the case against the perp is handled. And you are absolutely, positively due compensation for what is missing as well as compensation for what you went through.
Going public with the story isn't something I'd do right away. Corporate legal will understand immediately that this is one case where they're in an awful situation, and they will gladly compensate you in room nights and money to make things right and avoid both the big payout and the awful publicity. That's one of the things that "loss prevention" is all about.
