Buying ticket for return July 2018 (more than one year)

I am moving to Europe for 11 months. I'm looking to buy my outbound ticket relatively soon (SFO-CDG) for my September 02017 departure. But I can't book a return for August 2018 yet since it's more than 11 months out. One-way fares are prohibitive ($2700 each way) and there's no FF inventory right now.

My understanding is that the best way to do this is to buy a roundtrip with a return as far out as I can. Then call before that date and pay the change fee to rebook for the date I want. I don't think it matters what fare I book it in, they'll all have a $300 change fee.

Am I missing something in this calculation?

(Apologies if there's already a thread on this. I couldn't find it.)
