What's wrong with the Novotels? We stayed at the Novotel Bali Benoa four years ago and thought the price/quality ratio was excellent. Not sure how it has developed over the years, but TripAdvisor reviews are still mostly very good to excellent.

We had a Tropical Terrace room located in the Beach Wing. OK, no private pool, but a nice secluded private garden with lounge chairs instead. They have two pools. We usually went to the pool across the street which was relatively quiet.

There are several restaurants and shops within walking distance and lots of beach activities which you may be interested in.

I agree with Goldorak, I would avoid Kuta at all costs. We stayed in many areas in Bali and in my opinion Benoa Beach is a good compromise between the hectic Kuta and the rather dull Nusa Dua.
