I wouldn't worry, the gate agent will probably give you a tut-tut look. On BA they rarely need it, so may not notice, but if it's another airline then they should be OK just to write your sequence number on a slip of paper at the gate and send you on your way. Self printed boarding passes rarely have a tear off section and some airlines ask you to bring two. If all else fails they can just reprint the things.
